Sitting: New Smoking by Eunice Oyesiji

Sitting is the New Smoking

I know you're probably reading this magazine while being seated. Isn't it?

It's so comforting to sit down while scrolling through social media, working in front of a screen or doing anything at all. But on the flipside, sitting for too long can become addictive and harmful to one's health.

Prolonged sitting can affect the way your body metabolizes food and this often contributes to fat accumulation around the tummy (belly fat). It also weakens the legs and causes pain or stiffness in the neck, shoulder and back.

This kind of lifestyle if not watched can predispose a person to many life-threatening illnesses like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure, amongst others. Now that you know how harmful sitting for too long can be to your health, you need to start making deliberate efforts to change this narrative.

Putting any of these tips to practice is a good way to start:

🌻Avoid sitting for too long in front of your phone, laptop, computer or television.

🌻Take a walk instead of a ride.

🌻Use the stairs instead of the elevator.

🌻Stand up when making or receiving a call.

🌻Pace around your room for brainstorming.

🌻Step away from your workspace at intervals.

🌻Set a timer to remind you to stretch your body.

A sedentary lifestyle is fast becoming an addiction just like smoking but you can break free from this addiction by SITTING LESS AND MOVING MORE.

Start right now by stretching your hands and legs.

...this is to a healthier you.
